This campout was planned as a backpacking trip. The boys were required to have everything they needed in their backpacks so they would be able to backpack into the campground.

We only had the boys backpack a couple hundred yards into the campground (we stayed in Campground B; which is located on the East side of the lower lake); then they were able to set-up camp and make their dinners.

The next day we backpacked for about 5 miles using the trails on the West side of the upper lake. It was a beautiful day and everyone was able to complete the backpacking. When we completed the loop from 3 Acres, the wind was really blowing, so we had our lunch and then returned home.

This was a campout to help some of the boys meet some of the requirements for the first class rank (patrol cooking).

When we arrived, we were able to set up our camp and cook dinner before it started to rain. I rained throughout the night - very heavy at times; however, everyone was able to stay dry and warm.

Because the rain stopped in the morning, we were able to spend some time at the beach before we leaft.

This was the hiking and cooking portion of the Mormon Battalion Trail award. We'll do the remaining requirements during our San Diego trip in July.

We really lucked out during our trip. The temperatures were about 20 degrees below normal, so we had ideal hiking conditions.

This was another training hike for the Mormon Battalion

After spending the night at a campsite by the lower-lake, we drove over to the west-side boat launch and hiked about six miles.

It was a really beautiful day and we completed our hike at about noon time.

  • This was just a regular campout (no hiking).

It was very cold and windy when we arrived; and there was a little snow on the ground from the previous night.

Once camp was set up (including a fire), most everyone went to bed. In the morning we had breakfast and then left.

  • This was another campout and hike in preparation for our 50-mile adventure later this summer.

After we made camp and finished dinner, we celebrated Emilio's 12th birthday with some cupcakes.

The next morning we started up the South Fork Trail, but had to turn back because the trail had too many slides. After some discussion, we continued hiking on the Punch Bowl Trail.

  • We arrived at the picnic area at a little after 7:00 pm and hiked to Commodore Switzer's campsite (approx 2 miles) and then took the Bear Canyon Trail to hike to Bear Canyon campground.

We didn't quite make it to the Bear Canyon campground (we think we were about 1/4 mile short of the campground), but camped on the side of the trail (where there was already a fire circle made of rocks).

  • We intended to camp at the base of Mt. Baden Powell, however the road coming up from the 2 was closed, so we camped at Buckhorn campground.

Since we couldn't hike up Mt. Baden Powell, we decided to hike the Buckhart trail to Buckhorn Saddle (10 miles round trip) which was a similar distance.

  • We were going to camp at Sawmill, but couldn't find it; so we ended up at Cottonwood.

In the morning, we decided to do a six mile hike from the Church building to the AM/PM Mini Mart at Roxford and Olive View.

This was for a Deacon Duty to God requirement.

  • This was one of the coldest campouts we've been on in a long time.

In the morning, if you spilled a liquid on the table, it would freeze within a couple of minutes.

    Fortunately, everyone survived!

When we arrived it was cold and windy, but as expected, we all survived.

  • Since we've had an extended winter this year, we decided to have one more fun snow outing at Mt. Pinos (the elevation, as indicated by the sign on the Ski Patrol lodge, is 8300 feet)

There was plenty of snow at the top, but in the morning the sled runs were starting to become more icy than snowy.  Still, everyone had a good time.

  • We arrived at the Nature Center at about 8pm Friday night and hiked to Walker Ranch (approx. 2 miles).  It took us about an hour to reach our campsite.

After spending the night, we had breakfast and left on the return hike at about 6:50am Saturday morning.  This time it only took us about 30 minutes (this time it was mainly downhill).

  • This was a repeat of our December 2005 campout except there was more snow (approx. 5-6 inches).

We camped at a site next to the one we used in December. It was alot colder this time!

This campout was planned to be a fun outing where we only campout Friday night and play in the snow Saturday morning.

We hiked approx 100 yards to the Chula Vista campsite and made camp.

The planned activity was to work on the square and tripod lashings.

In the morning we cleaned up the campsite (collected trash and cleaned the stoves) and hiked the trail to a view of Switzer Falls.
